About the Programme

This EduCare programme is written by the NSPCC specifically for professionals who come into contact with children, young people and their parents through their work in a health setting. It provides an authoritative introduction to safeguarding and will help you to recognise the early warning signs of possible abuse.

Programme Contents

Module one - Understanding the Basics

Learn about the different types of child abuse: physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. Understand how abuse can affect a child and learn how to manage your own feelings. Eliminate misunderstandings by learning about some of the common myths and facts about child abuse.

Module two - Recognising Child Abuse

Identify possible physical and behavioural signs of the different types of abuse. Learn how to respond if a child discloses abuse and how you can give maximum support to a child in need. This module also covers what to do if you have strong suspicions of abuse, but a child has not said anything to suggest they have been abused.                                        
 
Module three - Reporting Child Abuse

Understand the importance of taking action to prevent child abuse from occurring and know when and when not, to share your concerns with parents. Follow the step-by-step action plan to report any concerns you may have about a child and understand the processes that takes place once you have reported your concerns.

Module four – Working Together

Learn about the background to the legal child protection framework, including key definitions and duties. Understand the role of the health professional in child protection and why it is important to work together to protect children. Learn about patient confidentiality in relation to child protection, pointers to good practice and how to handle allegations against staff. Follow the signposts for further information at the end of the module to enable you to extend your knowledge.
